Kenya’s radical cleric Sheikh Abubakar Shariff Makaburi was shot dead outside the Shanzu Law Courts in Mombasa yesterday.
Witnesses said that at approximately 6.30pm last evening, some men wearing white flowing robes in a white car opened fire on Makaburi and five other unidentified men as the group waited for a bus after appearing in the court.
A senior police officer in Mombasa, Richard Ngatia, confirmed that Makaburi, had been killed by “unknown assailants”.
Makaburi, dressed in white robes, had been shot in the chest. Another young man was also shot dead alongside Makaburi, in circumstances that were not immediately clear.
“One of them is the body of Abubaker Shariff alias Makaburi,” Ngatia told reporters
His family members also identified the body. Makaburi was killed two days after intelligence officials linked him to the March 23 killing of worshippers in a Mombasa church.
